MFL is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to detect corrosion and pitting in steel structures, most commonly on storage tank bottoms. The basic principle is that the steel surface to be tested is magnetized using a strong magnet. At areas where corrosion is present or material thickness has been reduced, the magnetic field leakage will occur. When utilizing the MFL equipment, a magnetic detector is placed between the poles of the magnet to detect the leakage field. The degree of magnetic leakage is then analyzed to identify damaged areas and estimate the depth of metal loss.

CMI Services utilizes the latest in MFL floor scanner technology to ensure accurate and thorough tank bottom assessments. Included as a standard practice with our internal API 653 inspection assessments, CMI Services can also provide MFL inspection as a stand-alone service.

Advantages of MFL inspection:

  • Excellent sensitivity to bottom side and top side corrosion/ pitting of tank bottoms
  • Permits relatively quick results on large scan surfaces
  • Allows for 100% coverage of large scan areas
